The Department of Immunology at the University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences was established as a fully-fledged Department in 1996 having operated in the previous several years as a Unit within the Department of Chemical Pathology.
The Department has an Academic staff establishment of four. The members are involved in teaching and training of Medical (MBChB, MMed) and Dental students (BDS) as well as BSc and MSc students from other disciplines who are interested in Immunology. The Department also supervises postgraduate students in their PhD/DPhil and MPhil projects. In addition to teaching, members of the Department are actively involved in research. The Departmental Research Theme is “Immunology of the immunocompromised host”. Most of the research which has immediate impact on the health of the communities studied, focuses on the two most common infectious diseases in the country, HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis. The research is conducted with local and international collaborative partners.
